      Commitment and Faith

      ‘Academic-Oriented Paradigm of Xiling Auction’

      Untitled, by Wu Da-Yu

The nature of heartfelt sentiments, I wish to tell you,

      is to be loved,

and yet falls in love with the unseenable,

      unknowable,

      unspeakable eternal beauty.

On December 23, 2017, from National Academy of Art to China Academy of Fine Art: Collection from a Ninety-Year Glory, a sale tribute organized by Xiling Auction concluded with a total turnover of RMB 98.90 million and a sale rate of 94%.

Wu Da-Yu’s Flowers in Vase, a painting completed in the 1950s, who is acclaimed as a master of masters, was sold at RMB 41.4 million from the starting price of RMB 12 million, a new record for his works ever auctioned.

Flowers in Vase is regarded as the starting point of Chinese abstract art. Wu Da-Yu, as an artist, was a trailblazer of the modern abstract paintings. He is also an educationist and one of the founders of the modern Chinese painting cause. As a great master of early Chinese abstract paintings, several well-known modernist masters both home and abroad, such asWu Guanzhong, Zao Wou-ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Zhao Chunxiang, etc. were tutored, enlightened and influenced under Wu Da-Yu.

The first lot from the sale is a rare seven-character couplet in regular script (‘Twin towers are blanketed in vapors, the city reflects against mountain landscape’) written by Mr. Cai Yuanpei. The institution established by Cai Yuanpei is where he advocated the fine art education and Wu Da-Yu relayed torches to his students including Zao Wou-ki, witnessing a heritage of the dream about the aesthetics. Where the ideal is loftier than all things and the diligence adorns its quality, there is a platform to overlook ‘twin towers’ and ‘mountain landscape’ in the art market.

It was Cai Yuanpei the educationist who led faculties like Lin Fengmian, Pan Tianshou and their students to open a new path to modern Chinese art educationat Luoyuan campus at ‘Gu Shan’ (the Solitary Hill) by the West Lake of Hangzhou in 1928. With the advent of the 90th anniversary of the founding of National Academy of Art,we set up a special sale in the name of the institute by breaking the boundary of painting type, time, school, etc.and collectively presented masterpieces by the founders, former presidents and alumni artists and related important literatures of National Academy of Art by gathering many treasures spanning over a long period of time.It significantly reflects ‘Academic-Oriented Paradigm of Xiling Auction’ when the art market intensively focuses on merely sale prices.

Retrospect of Xiling Yinshe 2017 Autumn Auction:

Deng Shiru, born in a poor family, eventually became a master with unprecedented and far-reaching influence over generations, just like his name described as ‘Wan Bo’, implying him as tough as a stone.

Duan Fang, in pursuit of an easy and peaceful way of life, using his knowledge to gather a cluster of talents to collect and authenticate antiques for compiling great works. He is widely honored as the pioneer of modern public collection.

Wu Yun, the master of ‘Liang Lei Xuan’, got in love with bronze wares and inscriptions due to his experience of readingBook of Hanin childhood and acquired two important bronze wares ultimately after diligent study and unremitting pursuit even by naming his studio with the two wares.

Pu Ru held the flag for the painting art by traditional scholars with his writing brush, and Chen Qinghua is memorized as a great ancient book collector at that time for his life-long endeavor in collecting books of Song and Yuan.

Master Hong Yi, who always restricted and expressed himself through calligraphic creation, enlightened many with his strong self-discipline.

Wu Changshuo and Shen Zengzhi are all dedicated to the seal cuttings amid which the most famous two seals ‘Hairilou’ and ‘Yanentang’ are like monuments weathered for centuries, guiding the old and new scholars alike with their unfading charms.

Charles Robert Darwin, as a scientist who extended human’s knowledge scope and put forward a prophecy beyond his times, has inspired so many for the past half century.

Chen Duxiu pursued new ways of revealing the ancient pronunciation of Chinese language and tried to expound on the formation and development of a country based on characters even when he was jailed in Nanjing Tiger Bridge Prison.

Guo Ruoyu, an expert on cultural relics, widely acquainted with masters and celebrities including Guo Moruo, Deng Sanmu, Huang Binhong, Feng Chaoran and Shen Yinmo, learned from his friends to build up his own position in paintings, calligraphy, classical books, seals, coins, Zisha wares and inkstones with great achievements.

The so-called Paradigm is a commitment to various theories and we refer it here in the hope of such conception being converted into common faith shared by all the participants in the art market. The academic-oriented paradigm, which has been advocated and practiced both in the philosophy of Xiling Yinshe and the cross-cultural platform by Xiling Auction, centers on integration, categorization and presentation of art, humanity, history, philosophy and science, which is not only an inevitable stage of academic art market in China but also a reflection of the ideological and cultural characteristics in nowadays.

As Xiling Online Auction steps into a new year and the first auction in Guangzhou approaches,
