The section presented over 70 works with detailed introductions according to their painting styles, hoping to provide collectors with a clear map of the two adjacent lots for more comparison and artistic inspiration from them.

Before the auction, the lots of the section were displayed at the exhibition of 'The Bright Moon in the Hand: The Humble Administrator's Garden and the Golden-Painted Fan Painting Art of Ming Dynasty' in Suzhou.

      Literati's Poems and Paintings

The Poetry and Paintings of Literary Masters contributed RMB 38.455 million and 90% sell-through rate with star lots all sold for high prices.

The section was aimed at breaking the shackles in people's mind that the calligraphic works are always appreciated in a calligraphic way but much more thoroughly, by paying more attention to the identity of the artist as a writer and appraising a work more stereoscopically and literarily.

Extreme warmth from the collectors at the auction of works by literary masters

This work is marked as the creation in the 1980s and has attracted many attentions from both researchers and collectors. Its topic, an integration of multiple elements in Wu's painting studio, appears to be the only one of the same style. The work uses French pigments which exude enchanting texture, luster and charm, and is recognized as a hymn to both himself and the Shixiang art attributed to its peculiar composition and strokes.

Ma Jin, director of the modern and contemporary art is accepting media interviews during the preview.

With the tenet of Xiling Society of Seal Art - 'Preservation of Stones and Bronzes, Study on Seal Cuttings as well as Paintings and Calligraphy' which has been maintained for around one century, the seal and inkstone section exhibited themselves through the engravings.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Xiling Yinshe Auction, the Department of Seals & Inkstones widened the scope of the engravings, from seals to inkstones and scholar's objects, and curated 'Study Series·Seal Cuttings by Modern and Contemporary Chinese Masters', 'Study Series·Chinese Inkstones and Inksticks' and 'The Soul of Scholarly Carvings: Literati's Artifacts and Engravings', which has collected both high revenue closing to total RMB 85 million and enormous acclamation from the market.

      Start Price: RMB 1.2 million

      Sale Price: RMB 7.475 million

One seal with 'Meng Li Bu Zhi Shen Shi Ke' mark is just a paradigm of Wu's work as if Wu used the knife as a writing brush to write the verse on the seal. Wu also used to write a preface 'Mei Hua Shi Mi Bai Shou Yin' for Chen Baojin who was the owner of the seal. The lot's estimate was RMB 1.2 million, and eventually was closed a deal at RMB 7.475 million, becoming the most valuable piece of this section.

One of the highlights of the autumn auction is a collective presence of the four famous albums about inkstone rubbings, which are so unprecedented and rare in the past auction history.

The Chengni inkstone with imperial inscription from Qianlong period of Qing dynasty was the second of the similar kind illustrated on Xi Qing Yan Pu and auctioned by us. The inkstone, which came from Song dynasty, has a regular shape with great elegance. On its back there is the inscription left by Emperor Qianlong, which is very rare. The treasure was finally sold for RMB 8.165 million from its starting price of RMB 3.8 million.

Lot 3630  Qianlong period, Qing Dynasty  A Chengni Inkstone with Imperial Inscription

      Start Price: RMB 3.8 million

A Duan Inkstone With Cloud and Dragon Patterns Inscribed By Ji Xiaolan, the inkstone, as recorded in Ji Xiaolan's Yue Wei Cao Tang Yan Pu (Catalogue of the Yue Wei Cao Tang Inkstones), sold for RMB 3.795 million. This inkstone bears two inscriptions, both in verse, with a continuous literary theme. Both inscriptions are included in Ji Wendagong Yiji (The Collected Works of Ji Wendagong), and only a few examples of this inkstone exist. In the The Soul of Scholarly Carvings: Literati's Artifacts and Engravings auction, a Brush Pot Inscribed with a Poem by Chen Hongshou's Second Son was sold for RMB 4.255 million.

This renowned artifact features a narrative inscription of over 100 characters and is the only known item in the market that records details about its life and the familial inheritance of the Chen family. It holds significant value for the study of the inscription style from the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods, the genealogical examination of the Chen family, and the research on Chen Hongshou's calligraphy and literary works.

The high premiums achieved by these auction lots reflect the deep cultivation and segmentation of the stone and seal market by Xiling Yinshe Auction over the past twenty years, as well as the collectors' profound understanding and recognition of stone culture.

During the preview, Xiling Yinshe Auction's Seal and Inkstone Department successfully held the 'The Soul of Scholarly Carvings' – An Appraisal Meeting of Stone Inscriptions. The teapot, with its inscription from the Northern Song Dynasty's poem Cha Fu , reads '挹此霜華,卻彼煩暑' ('Lift this frost's radiance, banish that troublesome heat'), which resonates with the personal account of Guo Wenbin's 'serendipitous meeting with oneself' and offers the best explanation of Xiling Yinshe Auction's long-standing efforts to explore the profound philosophy of literati Zisha.
